Frequently Asked Questions About Buying an ATV
-
What is an ATV?
+An All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), also known as a light utility vehicle (LUV) or quad, is a motorized four-wheeled off-road vehicle in which the driver (operator) straddles a seat and steers the vehicle using a handlebar. There are four primary types of ATVs:
- Utility
- Sport
- Side-by-Sides
- Youth
Generally, ATVs are either for a single driver with no passenger or suitable for a driver and a passenger. An ATV’s size is critical as youth models are for smaller riders and aren’t as fast or as large as adult models.

Where can I ride an ATV near me?
+Since most states have strict rules about driving an ATV on public roads, it is best to find a local public or private ATV trail and/or an off-road park in your area. -
Do ATVs have titles?
+Usually, yes. ATVs made from 1997 and on come with their own title. Before 1997, the titling regulations and laws for ATVs varied, so you may find an older ATV without a title. Some states do not require a title for ATVs since they are not allowed on paved roads. If you have an older ATV which is missing a title, contact your state’s DMV for off-road and utility vehicle titling information. -
How much does an ATV weigh?
+The average ATV for an adult can weigh between 500 to 700 pounds (227 to 318 kilograms). Smaller ATVs intended for youth drivers usually weigh between 215 pounds to 360 pounds (98 to 163 kilograms). These weights can vary once you add gas. -
