Motorcycle Overview

1946 Indian Chief-

It is not often that we here at the AutoBarn are able to offer a classic motorcycle with celebrity status. This handsome 1946 Indian Chief was the focus for an episode of Hagertys Barn Find Hunter series. The shows host, Tom Cotter, located the Indian inside a barn in Maine where it had been resting for over 60 years. The 2-owner Indian was brought back to NC and revived by Tom and his team who documented the effort in the episode entitled Indian Chief Barn Find.

Unrestored and Virtually Original-

The durable Chief model was built by the Indian Motorcycle company from 1922 until 1953 and became a mainstay of the Allied forces during WWII. This 1946 Indian Chief is an unmolested example of this outstanding classic. The bike is not restored, but has been thoroughly cleaned, detailed, and serviced. It runs very nicely and would likely ride beautifully if we had someone here talented enough to handle it. The frame, full valanced fenders and teardrop tank with script logo are all in good condition. Features include wide bars, chrome Miller running lights, foot-boards, chrome crash bars and leather bags. The chrome rims, spokes and hubs are all in good condition. The black leather saddle presents well and an instrument package includes speedometer, tachometer and AMP gauge. In total, the dry weight of the Indian Chief was stated to be 575 lbs.

74 Cubic Inch V-Twin w/3-Speed Transmission-

The Chief is powered by a 74 cubic inch/1200cc engine. This motor is a 2-cylinder, side-valve, 42-degree V-twin that was rated at approximately 40hp. A 3-speed transmission with right-hand suicide tank-shift uses a gear-drive primary system and right-side final chain drive. The 1946 model introduced new hydraulic dampened, girder-style coil-spring forks derived from military models. These springs provided 5 inches of travel, a significant improvement on the earlier leaf-spring designs. The rear utilized a plunger-type suspension and mechanical drum brakes were fitted front and rear. Without question, this is a wonderful example of a handsome, original Indian Chief that belongs in your motorcycle collection.
