Motorcycle Overview

The Indian Chief was Indians iconic heavy weight big twin motorcycle famed for its sweeping skirted fenders. It was a larger, more powerful motorcycle than the smaller and more nimble Scout that was used for most competitions. For many Indian collectors, the pre-1950 girder front fork Chiefs offered the best styling and aesthetics. 1950 and later Chiefs were fitted with hydraulic front forks, and many thought this destroyed the look of the motorcycle. After WWII in 1947 only the Chief makes a return to production, with a little over 11,000 being made, supposedly a stop-gap measure until lighter, more advanced models could come online, but several serious financial mistakes doomed the company. CONDITION: This is believed to be an older professional light restoration and possibly an original paint with very minimal touch-up. Presented in Deluxe Jet Black, this is a B designation CDG38## B serial number and it is believed to be a Roadmaster model with saddlebags and jeweled fender trim added at a later date. The motorcycle has been actively used and well-maintained, and remains in above-average condition for its age, especially as a 79-year-old example. Tires show light oxidation from age and the leather is still soft and pliable, but could use some light conditioning. There are several gasket seepage leeks from sitting staining area of the motor case. We have made no attempt to start this motorcycle, but it will turn with good compression and the transmission will shift through all gears. Sold as-is with no warranty.
