Motorcycle Overview

1963 BSA 650 Royal Star

VIN:  A50-5109

The big news for BSA in 1962 was the introduction of their Star line, which featured a unitized construction that enclosed the engine and transmission within a single case.  Both 500cc A50 and 650cc A65 versions were produced, with a special version called the Royal Star built specifically for the US market.  The 650cc version was exported in much smaller numbers, so much so that most reference guides list only the A50 Royal Star in their catalogs.  BSA did make an A65, however, and a brochure advertising it is included in the sale.

The 1963 example shown here is the rarer A65 Royal Star.  This was BSA's version of a Sport Touring bike, with classic styling and lots of torque on the low end and plenty of horsepower up top that allowed for brisk acceleration as well as comfortable cruising at 70mph for extended periods.  Finished in Flamboyant Red, a pleasing candy apple red color, it was acquired by the current owner in 2005 with the speedometer showing 24,600 miles.  It was then taken to BSA/Triumph specialist Aaron Cundall, who rebuilt the engine and transmission and refurbished the rest of the bike.  It was then started and run before being pickled and placed into storage. (All work docs included with the sale).
