When Honda launched its operations on these shores in 1959 no one realized that an oriental tsunami was about to transform the world of American motorcycling. Since World War II it had been all about Harleys and British twins and Marlon Brando's The Wild One, and then upstart Honda arrived with its 49cc Super Cub and a family friendly advertising slogan touting that You Meet the Nicest People On A Honda.  At first no one paid attention and then, in 1961, Honda rolled out the CB77 Super Hawk, a bike that was as quick as the British twins, was more reliable, cost half as much, and did not leak oil.  The Super Hawk stands out today as the Honda Corporation's first road going sport bike, and was the first shot across the bow that the Japanese might seriously be taking aim at the British motorcycle industry.

The example you see here is a 1963 model, which is part of the early CB77 series that featured the low bars popular with cafe racers. Standard features include a 305cc overhead cam engine with dual carburetors and 4 speed transmission cradled in a tubular chassis, 8 inch double leading shoe brakes, electric start, dual speedo and tach gauges, and a 100 mph top speed.  The paint is dark blue, one of the Super Hawk's less common colors.  It had received a complete restoration and ridden less than 200 miles afterward when it was purchased by the current owner in 2009, and the odometer showed 19,250 miles.  Five years later, at 19,600 miles, it received a full service that included clutch, timing, and valve adjustments and fresh spark plugs.  The bike has been carefully maintained and ridden sparingly since, and the odometer currently shows 19,751 miles.
