Motorcycle Overview
To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Arizona event, 23 January 2026.
Offered Without Reserve $10,000 - $15,000 USD
Named after the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, where Triumph claimed numerous speed records, the T120-based Bonneville TT Special was produced from 1963 to 1967. The stripped-down, ready-to-race production machine offered only in the United States delivered an intoxicating riding experience, eschewing many of the standard models comfort features. The Bonneville TT Special was famous for its use in the Baja 1000 and the International Six Days Trial by Steve McQueen.
Compared to the street version, the Bonneville TT Special lacked a battery and carrier, exhaust silencer, headlight, horn, passenger footpegs, speedometer, and taillight assembly. Intended to appeal to TT scramble and flat-track riders, it was an instant hit and victorious challenger in US-based TT races and flat-track events.
Distinguished by its copper and cream gas tank, this 1964 model improves on earlier versions with a revised cylinder head design, new forks featuring external springs, a magnetic tachometer by Smiths, and aluminum-alloy body panels. A 649-cubic-centimeter air-cooled parallel-twin engine is factory-rated for 52 horsepower and paired with a four-speed gearbox.
Fully restored, with work understood to have been overseen by the late, Michigan-based Triumph motorcycle authority Bill Hoard, this Bonneville TT Special will make for a wonderful collection piece or thrilling flat-track sled.
