Motorcycle Overview
1978 Yamaha XS1100
VIN: 2H7-007068
30,150 Original Miles!
The Yamaha 1100cc Yamaha XS11 and the 1050cc Honda CBX were the titans of the motorcycle industry back in 1978. The XS1100 was the first production bike to break the 12 second quarter mile mark, though the CBX followed a few months later to beat the Yamaha's time by 1/10 of a second. Though close in performance, however, the two bikes had distinctly different personalities: Whereas the CBX was a high revving masterpiece of engineering complexity, the massive torque and shaft driven Yamaha emphasized low maintenance high speed touring with brute force mid range power think of a Ferrari vs a Hemi powered Bentley. If you want to make a statement, go with the CBX. If you are more interested in better mid-range and less shifting, the Yamaha wins out. And if you are interested in lower maintenance and a purchase price that won't eviscerate your wallet, its no contest: Pick the XS1100.
The example you see here was purchased by the current owner in 2007 with 29,100 miles showing on the odometer. In 2009 it was freshened up and refurbished into a mild custom. A four into one exhaust system was installed to bump the performance beyond CBX levels, and the bike was treated to a custom repaint. Though it looks black in the photos, in bright sunlight it is actually a midnight metallic green. A white strip outlined in gold pinstripe has been added to the tank and tail piece. Yamaha lettering and the traditional Yamaha triple tuning fork logo has been applied to the tank in the same gold coloring as the pinstripe, and a stylized gold XS1100 logo has been applied to the side covers. New tires were added in 2015. The bike has been carefully maintained and ridden sparingly since, and the odometer currently reads 30,145 miles.
