Motorcycle Overview

1981 Kawasaki KZ1000J1 Review: The Last of the True Superbikes The 1981 Kawasaki KZ1000J1 was a pivotal model in the evolution of Kawasaki?s legendary inline-four superbikes. As a successor to the earlier KZ1000A and MkII series the J1 represented a major redesign that emphasized both performance and refinement. It was one of the last air-cooled carbureted sport standards before the advent of modern sportbikes. At its heart the KZ1000J1 boasts a 998cc DOHC inline-four engine producing around 102 horsepower?a significant output for the time. The J-series engine was all new for 1981 with: More compact design Redesigned cylinder head for better airflow 28mm Mikuni CV carbs (upgraded from earlier slide-type carbs) Increased compression ratio (8.8:1) This motor was not only more powerful but also more responsive and smoother than its predecessors. It could run the quarter-mile in the low 11-second range putting it toe-to-toe with the best from Honda Suzuki and Yamaha. The KZ1000J1 was built on a reinforced double-cradle steel frame?more rigid than earlier models which significantly improved high-speed stability. Suspension included: 35mm front forks Twin rear shocks with preload adjustability 19 front / 18 rear cast wheels While not razor-sharp by modern standards the J1 handled surprisingly well for a 550 lb (wet weight) machine. It was stable at speed and predictable in corners?ideal for sport touring or spirited weekend riding.
