Motorcycle Overview

1983 Honda GL1100 Gold Wing Aspencade

VIN:  1HFSC0223DA321759

In 1983 the gold standard for touring bikes was Honda's iconic Gold Wing, and the gold standard for Gold Wings was the GL1100A Aspencade model.  The Aspencade was similar to the full dress Interstate model but incorporated several additional features as standard equipment, including: (1) A digital rather than analogue instrument panel with maintenance interval indicators; (2) an on board air compressor for adjusting the front suspension from the cockpit; (3) internally vented rotors on the dual front discs for better heat dissipation during braking; (4) an AM/FM stereo; (5) extra storage pouches mounted on the trunk; and (6) a two-tone paint scheme.  The bike shown here sports what is commonly referred to as a red on red scheme: Candy Wineberry Red (which looks more like a shade of burgundy) against Metallic Red, separated by gold and silver pinstripes. The remarkably smooth 1100cc opposed four cylinder motor puts out 81 hp and, coupled to a 5 speed transmission and low maintenance shaft drive, is capable of a 121 mph top speed and 0 to 60mph acceleration in 4-1/2 seconds, more than respectable performance for a Grand Touring bike.  Famous for their reliability, these bikes commonly run 200,000 to 300,000 miles before requiring major engine work if maintained properly (change the oil every 3,000 miles, adjust the valves every 8,000 miles, and change the timing belt every 50,000 miles).

The example you see here was purchased from a Canadian friend in 2009 with 63,000 kilometers on the odometer, which works out to only 39,146 miles.  (Although the speedometer reads in both mph and kph, the odometer reads only in kilometers.) Brian, the original owner, carefully maintained this bike, and I have done the same.  It has been sparingly ridden since then, and was most recently serviced at 64,000 kilometers (39,768 miles).  The odometer currently reads a low, low 64,581 kilometers, or 40,128 miles.  A workshop manual, tool kit, spare timing belt, and extra oil filter are also included in the sale.

Today a top of the line Gold Wing with all the bells and whistles will set you back a whopping $33,800.  You can buy this one, with tons of unused miles left in it, for a small fraction of that price.
