Indian is Americas oldest bike producer, having commenced production in 1901, two years before Harley-Davidsons arrival. Though it has been through its share of peaks and troughs (including going out of business in 1953) the spirit of Indian motorcycles always shone through and new management were able to take the Indian name back to full-scale bike production in 1999 after a lengthy legal battle to use the name. To commemorate the centenary in 2001 Indian produced 2001 Chief Centennial Special Edition bikes finished in Black and Gold.
